Organisation’s 2011 statistics state that with an estimated figure of 2.2
million cases of TB, India remains the highest TB burden country of the world.
The recently discovered phenomenon of TDR-TB has worsened the scene. The
drug-resistance rate in India is higher than the global average by 2 to 3%. The
efforts of Tuberculosis Association of India and Revised National TB Control
Programme have improved the scenario tremendously, but TB still kills around
3,00,000 people in our country, every year. Researches have proved that
isoniazid and rifampicin, the two most powerful first line treatment anti-TB
drugs fail when it comes to MDR-TB, which can only be diagnosed in specialized
labs. Despite great advances in medicine, the situation remains grim.
