Redefining infertility and its prevalence: a contemporary approach

Recent advances in assisted reproductive technology, particularly at a genetic level, have helped us to better understand the causes of infertility, and also to offer techniques that maximize the safety and efficiency of treatment and therefore the chance of a successful outcome. Fertility assistance, whether minimal or high level, aims to optimize the chances of having a singleton pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby.

Problem with TB drugs and vaccine

Emergence of drug resistance TB in the recent years has posed a great problem with handling the disease. Irregular and misuse of TB drug isoniazid has been one of the major causes for it. Co-infection of TB with HIV makes handling the disease even more complex for administration of anti tuberculosis drugs.  Also, the major vaccine against the disease, Baccillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has its own side effects and in some cases has been inefficient in preventing the disease.

Why is TB still a major problem in India?

WHO recommended a strategy to control TB in the world called directly observed treatment, short course (DOTS) which includes; political commitment, case detection, standardization of treatment, adequate drug supply, monitoring and evaluation of its impact. In India however this strategy has been failing due to several reasons: Lack of commitment from the government, inefficiency of handling a large population with TB,   lack of information for poor people regarding the disease and its control, lack of patient follow up are few of the several problems associated with it.

Latent TB infection in India

India has a very high number of latent TB infection cases (LTBI) around the world. The diagnosis and treatment of LTBI are equally important as it later develops into active form. Tb when not diagnosed and treated at its first stage develops into more complex forms called drug resistive TB and extensively drug resistive TB.

Status of TB in India

Congratulations! India for now officially being a polio free country, however, the same cannot be said on the status of TB in India. Even after decades of introduction of numerous TB control programs, India is host to maximum number of TB patients around the world. Several diagnostic advancements have been made in the fields like smear microscopy, rapid culture, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria differentiation, in-house PCR assays, serological tests etc. Effective disease management in India can be achieved by simply validating and applying these methods in a lab or a public health setting.

TB IN INDIA- THE GRAVE SITUATION

World Health Organisation’s 2011 statistics state that with an estimated figure of 2.2 million cases of TB, India remains the highest TB burden country of the world. The recently discovered phenomenon of TDR-TB has worsened the scene. The drug-resistance rate in India is higher than the global average by 2 to 3%. The efforts of Tuberculosis Association of India and Revised National TB Control Programme have improved the scenario tremendously, but TB still kills around 3,00,000 people in our country, every year. Researches have proved that isoniazid and rifampicin, the two most powerful first line treatment anti-TB drugs fail when it comes to MDR-TB, which can only be diagnosed in specialized labs. Despite great advances in medicine, the situation remains grim.

Webinar symposium

Considering this precarious condition, Dr. Lal PathLabs, one of the most reputed diagnostic chains of India have taken a brilliant initiative of organizing a Webinar Symposium on the topic “Breakthrough in Diagnosis and Effective Treatment of TB.” The webinar will be webcast on Sunday, 30th March 2014, from 11 AM to 1 PM from Hotel Claridges, New Delhi. An informative Q & A session will follow the insightful presentations. You are cordially invited to participate in this free webinar by registering online.
