India is among these high TB burden countries with a
whopping 26% of the world TB patients. With the emergence of newer strains of
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, some of which are extensively drug resistant, TB
has become a challenge to treat, requiring an immediate and strong action
against the disease for the wellbeing of humanity. India, in 1948, introduced bacille
Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine in its mass immunization program. This program
has however failed to reach its expected potential. With the introduction of
Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course (DOTS) in India in 1997, a major step
towards TB elimination has been taken by the government on a large scale.
